The loot philosophy
Per "Forging the Next Era", "Itemization in Diablo V is inspired by Diablo II." The goal is items that read clearly, stick in your memory, and keep you hunting for hundreds of hours. Confirmed[B1] news.blizzard.com · verified Oct 9, 2026
On stage, game director Joe Shely boiled it down to "Depth, clarity, and identity," and compared it to New York: easy to enjoy the day you arrive, deep once you know it. Confirmed[T2] warcraft.blizzplanet.com · verified Oct 6, 2026

Diablo II or Diablo II: Resurrected?
Both. Talking to TechRadar Gaming, Shely said the team doesn't only look back 20 years: Diablo II: Resurrected, the 2021 remaster, lives alongside Diablo IV today, so they can view it "through today's lens." His summary: "We can bring lessons from D2, but lessons from today." Per the outlet, Resurrected's itemization is one of the main inspirations. Interview[T3] techradar.com · verified Oct 10, 2026
Will items be complicated?
Not at first. Shely calls it "deferred complexity": pushing some of the systems and itemization complexity into the endgame, so endgame fans get depth and mastery without "overwhelming our players who are enjoying spending a lot of time in the campaign and exploring the world." Interview[T3] techradar.com · verified Oct 10, 2026
It matches what he said on stage: items start simple and grow with you, plus his New York metaphor. Confirmed[T2] warcraft.blizzplanet.com · verified Oct 6, 2026
In a separate interview with Korean press, executive producer Matt Zitterman described the same idea as a concept Shely often talks about: depth layered in gradually as you progress. That text is the outlet's translation from Korean. Interview[T3] invenglobal.com · verified Oct 10, 2026
It's a design intent, not an announced system: nobody has said which parts land in the endgame.
Is Tetris inventory back?
Yes. "Larger items once again take up more slots in your inventory." Blizzard ties it to item identity: a piece of gear should look the same on the ground, in your bag and on your character. Confirmed[B1] news.blizzard.com · verified Oct 9, 2026[T2] warcraft.blizzplanet.com · verified Oct 9, 2026

Are set items coming back?
Yes: "Gear-based sets are also returning for Diablo V." Pieces you find separately that complete an idea once you put them together. Confirmed[B1] news.blizzard.com · verified Oct 10, 2026
On stage, Shely explained the starting point: the team liked what the talisman did in Lord of Hatred but wants to tie the set concept back to gear. Finding one piece hands you a "quest" to complete the rest, and sets should broaden the number of viable builds instead of shrinking it. Confirmed[T2] warcraft.blizzplanet.com · verified Oct 6, 2026

What you can read into them (without assuming)
- Provisional[B1] bnetcmsus-a.akamaihd.net · verified Oct 6, 2026Two rarities are visible, "Magic" (blue) and "Rare" (gold), and requirements use Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence.
- Provisional[B1] bnetcmsus-a.akamaihd.net · verified Oct 6, 2026One affix mentions "Summons." It doesn't say which class summons, so no class can be said to have summons.
- Provisional[B1] bnetcmsus-a.akamaihd.net · verified Oct 6, 2026A "Corrupt" affix does not mean corruption is a confirmed system.
- Interview[T3] twitter.com · verified Oct 6, 2026Separately, Shely posted on X that Diablo V will be "an INT/STR game": more planning and builds than reflexes. It is a line about the game, not about these stats.
What we don't know yet
As of October 10, 2026, Blizzard has not said:
- how many item tiers or rarities exist, or what they're called;
- whether there are unique or legendary items;
- how affixes and sockets work;
- inventory and item sizes, or whether there's a stash;
- how many pieces a set has and what bonuses it grants;
- whether there will be player trading or an auction house;
- which systems "deferred complexity" actually saves for the endgame.
