What is Diablo 5 about?
For the first time in the series, you don't arrive in time to stop the apocalypse. You arrive after it. Blizzard's recap ("Forging the Next Era") sets it up plainly: the heroes of the past failed, Sanctuary fell, and "Diablo has conquered Sanctuary." Confirmed[B1] news.blizzard.com · verified Oct 9, 2026
From the throne of Westmarch, he turns Sanctuary's people and souls into weapons in the Eternal Conflict. Sanctuary is only a step; the Heavens are next. Confirmed[B1] news.blizzard.com · verified Oct 9, 2026
At the panel, narrative director Jennifer Brandes Hepler explained the choice: if the game was bringing Diablo back, he couldn't just be a final boss. He had to be the force shaping the game from its opening moments. Confirmed[T2] warcraft.blizzplanet.com · verified Oct 6, 2026
Who is the protagonist?

Where do the Heavens stand?
Uneasily. Hepler described Sanctuary as caught between Diablo's aggression and the "almost equally damaging indifference of the Heavens." Even so, the panel teased that you may find an ally among the angels. Confirmed[T2] warcraft.blizzplanet.com · verified Oct 6, 2026
In one interview, the team argued that if the conflict is truly eternal, sometimes good wins and sometimes evil does; this time, Diablo wins (interviewer's paraphrase). Interview[T3] playday.one · verified Oct 6, 2026 → The Eternal Conflict in Diablo 5
How long after Diablo IV is it set?
About 100 years, according to the team; Blizzard hasn't published it. What's official: Diablo conquered Sanctuary seven years ago, and after Mephisto's defeat there was a golden age when Sanctuary was better off than ever (Hepler, panel). The 100-year figure comes from developers in interviews:

A lot, by the team's account. On the Official Xbox Podcast, Matt Zitterman said the director's office has a sticky note reading "Best campaign ever": the campaign is one of the game's pillars. Interview[T3] news.xbox.com · verified Oct 6, 2026
What we don't know yet
As of October 10, 2026, Blizzard has not explained:
- how Diablo came back;
- the Heir's name, whether it's a fixed character or your own, and where the bond comes from;
- the exact gap with Diablo IV on an official channel (the 100 years only appears in interviews);
- how many Dread Commanders there are and who they are;
- who the angelic ally is;
- which powers the Heir discovers in the terror realm.
We'll cover the series backstory (Sanctuary, the Eternal Conflict, Westmarch in earlier games) once we have an official Blizzard source for it. We don't write lore from memory.
